Emu Hatchling Skeleton

Description

Dromaius novaehollandiae hatchling--This is a skeletal taxidermy mount of emu chick emerging from egg. This specimen illustrates the similarities between dinosaurs and birds. The eggs of emus have a similar texture to many fossilized dinosaur eggs. Emus are flightless birds that are native to Australia, and they lay the second largest egg of any living bird, followed only by the ostrich. Their eggs are even more of a brilliant turquoise when they are first laid, and turn slowly to black. Emu chicks initially weigh less that a pound, but will reach an adult size of 120 pounds in less than two years. I study emu muscle physiology and development at Colorado State University. This emu chick died of natural causes, and was donated from an emu ranch in Livermore, Colorado. The bones were cleaned, and then assembled one by one. This is the second of three emu chick skeletons I have completed thus far.

Aw, poor little chick.
Sad that it died so young.
But you did an awesome tribute :>
The skeleton and the pose look wonderful.
